One of the most majestic places I’ve been to, if only I could go back and visit more… I got the amazing opportunity to travel to South Africa for work last month. Even though I spent most of my time working I got a few days to discover this country for the 1st time.
After setting up base at the Maslow Hotel it was time to explore the area. Joburg not being a walking city it was hard getting around or trying to wander around or « get lost » you kind of have to know where you want to go. My first stop was the closest : the Sandton Mall where is located the Nelson Mandela square which is a nice place for grabbing a snack or sit down for drinks with friends.
JoBurg is pretty lit! There are clubs everywhere on Jam Smuts avenue in Rosebank with with great music that keeps you in the club til it closes especially Sumo club where I went out the 2nd night.
If clubbing ain’t your vibe and you’re looking for a more chilled vibe I would recommend going to Mad Giant a craft brewery located in the 1 Fox Precinct, restored warehouses in Joburg’s historic Ferreirasdorp district. You should definitely try the Urbanologi experience with wine tasting and Asian fusion food!
Another spot I visited while in Gauteng region was Soweto’s Kliptown township where is located the Little Rose Center youth shelter for the less fortunate children. It was a very moving experience meeting those kids and getting a glimpse at their daily life in one of Soweto’s poorest townships. I think it’s great to visit those places to help the local communities by making a donation and to keep you grounded and count your blessings.
After a couple days in JoBurg it was time to head to Sun City, located at the Pilanesberg natural park game reserve. Sun City is an incredible resort city with casinos, a lagoon, malls and almost all the activities you can imagine. This is where I did my first ever Safari introducing the Big 5 – Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros and Leopard. Unfortunately the safari ride did not went as smoothly as expected since our group got hit by a storm like 30 min after starting the visit, but it was a lot of fun !
